Eleusis
The riddle of the Eleusian Mysteries has, historically and psychologically, engrossed me for a long time. A link to my own thoughts is given below.
Yet George Mylonas, the best-known scholar of Eleusis sees nothing of the like. In desperation he exclaims, "A thick, impenetrable veil indeed still covers securely the rites of Demeter and protects them from the curious eyes of the modern student. How many days and nights have spent over books, inscriptions, and works of art by eminent scholars in their effort to lift the veil! How many wild and ingenious theories have been advanced in superhuman efforts to explain the mysteries! How many nights have I spent standing on the steps of the Telesterion, flooded with the magic silver light of a Mediterranean moon (sic!), hoping to catch the mood of the initiates, hoping that the human soul might get a glimpse of what the rational mind could not investigate! All in vain—the ancient world has kept its secret well, and the mysteries of Eleusis remain unrevealed." - Which you should keep in mind when reading my text! It is based on intuition not on archeological facts. Moreover I used among other text Carl Kerenyi's and Jung's psychological interpretations, which are anathema to the art historians and archeologists....
