To appreciate the size of this deesis one must realize that each of the panels measures 210 cm high x 90 cm !

The iconostasis is the elaborately painted wall of icons that separates the Holy Apse from the main nave of an Orthodox church. It has a varying number of tiers : depicting on the lowest tier the local icons right and left of the Holy Door, the Deesis, shown here, is above the door, one or two tiera with the icons of the Feast Days above that, and a tier of prophets and church fathers at the top.

The iconostasis of the Annunciation Cathedral in the Mocow Kreml is one of Rublyëv's earliest works. The original panels have been carefully restored and are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. They have been replaced by copies in the Cathedral. A detailed discussion of the provenance of the deesis by O. G. Ulyanov (2005) in Russian is found here.
