Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna
GNAM, for decades the only "modern art" museum in Rome
Via delle Belle Arti 131

A recent exhibition of 19th cent sculptures at the Museum during the “Notte dei Musei”.

Curiously, the pervasive presence of classical sculpture is so large in Rome, that there exists no modern art museum that could be compared to those of northern Europe. The situation is reminiscent of Munich: Modern art exists in Cologne and Düsseldorf or Milano and Torino but not in Rome. - Maybe some private collector will help to fill this void and the new MAXII with post 20th century art.

??, Ecce Homo (1891)

GNAM is an underrated way to see art made after the Renaissance: mainly second-rate Italian artists of the 19th cent. A few later artists like Cézanne, Degas, Kandinsky, Man Ray, Modigliani, Monet, Pollock and Van Gogh, and De Chirico are also represented.
Full ticket €10; Via delle Belle Arti 131 (Up the hill from Villa Giulia or down the hill from the Zoo.), ☎ +39 06 322 981, Tu-Su 08.30-19.30.

MAXXI Museum of 21st-Century Art
Via Guido Reni 4a
Zaha Hadid's new Museum of the Art of the XXI Century, 2011

The great hope for contemporary art in Italy has been built and was opened 2010. So far it seems to be empty the 2012 catalog of the permanent collection counts 50 works-- no known artists.

View of the building site, 2009

The strength of Hadid's designs is in the bold and powerful interior of MAXXI. - Its tragedy is the scarcety of contemporary paintings in possession of the city/state.... So far MAXXI is essentially an half-empty shell worth a visit for the architecturally interested.
