Mauritshuis



The Mauritshuis houses the Royal Dutch Painting Gallery. In 1815 King Willem I (1772-1843) deeded the collection to the Dutch state.





Rogier van der Weyden (and shop), Lamentation of Christ, 1460-64

Rogier van der Weyden (1399 – 1564) and Jan van Eyck (1394 – 1441) were the inventors of Flemish oil painting. Van der Weyden, working in Brussels with a large shop, was a most prolific painter. His paintings are distributed throughout Europe. This altarpiece is the only work by him in a
Dutch museum.
