Musee Royeaux des Beaux Arts

Museum of Modern Art

Please do not copy my internet reproductions on this webpage.

Begun in 1984 as an extension of the 1847 Musee Royeaux des Beaux Arts, the Museum of Modern Art was designed by Roger Bastin as a subterranean, delightfully architecture brute gallery with eight levels arranged around a light well. I will treat it separately not only because of its refreshingly modern design compared to the neo-classical halls of the older part, but also because there we found the pieces that interested us most.

Foremost is a collection of Paul Delveaux's (1897 – 1994) Paintings. Since our visit Delveaux has acquired his own, new museum operated by the Delveaux Society, which controls the copyrights of his paintings.

Paul Delveaux, Les Rendez-vous de'Ephese-Found

Paul Delveaux, L'Hiver ou la Ville Enfoule, 1958

Paul Delveaux, Pygmalion

Paul Delveaux, Nocturnes, 1939

Another painter well represented in this museum is René Magritte (1898 – 1967). Both Magritte and Delveaux have since become Barbara's favourite painters.

René Magritte, Le Joueurs Secrete, 1927

René Magritte, La Moison, 1943

René Magritte, La Cinquième Saison, 1943

René Magritte, L'Empire des Lumiéres, 1954

René Magritte, La Recherche de la Verité, 1963

And last not least the even more elusive James Ensor (1860 - 1949)

James Ensor, Musicians, 1891

James Ensor, The Painter among Masks

James Ensor, Masks Mocking Death, 1918
