Allart du Hameel, Last Judgment (according to the inscription it represents a painting by Bosch)

I spent an hour in the print section of the Museum staring at this etching. It is one of the first etchings ever made.The artist was the chief architect of the Sint-Jans cathedral in s'Hertogenbosch. Du Hameel certainly knew Bosch. -

I now think that the print is a reproduction of the central panel of a large Last Judgment triptych by Bosch which hung in Sint-Jans and was after Bosch's death destroyed by Protestant iconoclasts. The four side panels of the triptych would then be the four panels at the Doge's Palace in Venice (or so I argue). Together they form a pentatych - the fit is perfect. For details click here
