Early Sculptures from Four Exhibitions

.

Assembled by Rolf Gross

For Barbara's Birthday 2006

Later Works : Brigitte Press' Catalogue of 2005

These illustrations collected from four catalogues, presents from Herbert Press to Rolf and Barbara Gross during 1965 - 1974, contain a number of especially poetic sculptures from Herbert Press' early years. Among them are some of his poetic, sub- to supra-terrestrial Landschaften (landscapes), and more absurd, ominous Gewächse (plants) , which seemingly without effort mutate into threatening Kampfwagen (armored vehicles). They are the flowers of Herbert's sensitive imagination during the years of the Berlin Blockade. The city had turned into a heavily fortified island, with American armor and personnel in evidence everywhere. Herbert's mind was deeply effected by what he saw, but at the same time he considered it a great stimulus for his fantasy. He confessed to often beeing persued by vivid dreams expressing old childhood fears.

These photos compliment Brigitte Press' website. None of the objects appear in her collection. The ctalogues are long out of print and unavailable. Barbara collected them. The whereabouts of many of these sculptures is unknown, e. g., one of the Orakel (oracles) was stolen form a gallery in Berlin in 1962 and to my knowledge has never resurfaced again! My reproductions of these photos are entirely unauthorized.

This large catalogue showed a nearly complete collection of his work up to 1972. Unfortunately my copy is in tatters, and the captions do not give the sizes of the objects. They were, however, provided by the last catalogue, from where I transfered this information.
