Precipitated by a Hieronymus Bosch
Exhibition in Rotterdam I had planned an extended tour of the museums
in Holland, Belgium, Hamburg and Berlin. Marcus and Monique offered
to drive us and picked us up in Düsseldorf. It became the
greatest experience of museums ever: I searched for Bosch and the Old
Masters, Barbara for modern paintings: the early Mondrian in Den
Haag, Ensor, Delveaux and Magritte in Brussels. In Hagen Christine
and Rudolf Scharlau in their art-nouveaux
house
lay on the way. They took us to a Turner exhibition in Essen, which
topped off the experience. We saw Klaus and Lilo in Hamburg and met
Dieter and Evelyn for a few hours in Berlin, the only time we ever
saw them together.

Cornelius
and Anne-Cecile in Tibet

Nov(?)
Cornelius had wanted to take AC to Tibet, who had spent some time roaming China on her own(!). It became a crazy tour. They flew from Chengdu to Lhasa and hitch-hiked 1500 km along the Tsangpo valley to south eastern Tibet, circumabulated a sacred Bön mountain, and hitch-hiked back to Lhasa. Having some time on their hands they went on excursion to the Crab Lake and the monastery of the female incarnation of Tibet. Some day he has to collect his pictures and tell the tale. - On their way back they visited us for a few days.

Rolf
and Barbara Christmas-New Year in New Mexico
No one wanted to visit us for Christmas this year. So Barbara drove us to New Mexico along the by ways: Tucson, White Sands Nat Monument, Grand Quivira (Salinas Pueblo Nat. Monument), Albuquerque, Las Vegas,NM, Madrid – where we bought a beautiful Tibetan rug made by Indians in Mexico(!) - Santa Fe, Rancho di Chimayo, where we spent Christmas Eve. In Taos we visited an old friend, and returned to Los Alamos, via the old Spanish villages – Las Truchas - Bandelier Nat. Monument, Canyon de Chelly. An excursion to Chaco Canyon fell through because of bad roads in December. In Flagstaff on New Year's Day Barbara suddenly decided to drive to Grand Canyon, where we were surprised by a spell-binding late afternoon at the snowed-in South Rim....
